\"Breakdown\" is a song by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey from her sixth studio album Butterfly (1997). The song features rap verses by two of the five members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. The song was released in January 1998 by Columbia Records as the third single from Butterfly. The song's lyrics describe the emotions someone feels when their lover suddenly stops loving and leaves them, and the pain, or breakdown, it caused them. Critics perceived it to be about her separation from husband Tommy Mottola, which Carey denied. The song was well received by contemporary music critics.
In 2001, Mariah Carey's publicist confirmed she had an \"emotional and physical breakdown\" following a series of bizarre events beginning with an appearance on \"Total Request Live\" and ending with her in a rehab facility.
Speaking out about the whole ordeal in her new book, \"The Meaning of Mariah Carey,\" the singer says it was not, in fact, a \"breakdown,\" but \"somatization\" due to a combination of anxiety, exhaustion and past trauma.
In a new interview, the 32-year-old pop diva insists she did not have a nervous breakdown. She says she was simply exhausted from working around the clock. The problem, she says, was that she hated to say no when her career placed demands on her.
\\\"No, it was not a nervous breakdown,\\\" she said. \\\"There were a lot of different things. It was emotional and physical. More than anything, it was [my] body saying, 'Stop.' Your body can only take so much. Sleep deprivation is real.\\\"
Yet Carey's breakdown suggests things were not as free as she would have liked. She spent two weeks under supervised care and canceled all public engagements, including a headline appearance at MTV's 20th birthday celebration on August 1.
\"It was an emotional and physical breakdown, but it wasn't a nervous breakdown, because you don't recover from that really. And even my therapist was like, 'You didn't have a breakdown; you had a diva fit and people couldn't handle it,\" she added. \"These people are here making money off me; why don't they care if nobody's got an umbrella for me, and it's a sunny shoot And the minute I was like, 'I'm not fine; I need a day off, I need a moment,'\" she continued, \"Nobody could handle it because they infantilized me from the beginning,\" speaking in an interview. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1676371845243-0'); });
Back in 2001, Carey who was in the middle of promoting her new album and movie Glitter was hospitalized. She reportedly underwent psychiatric care for her emotional and physical breakdown as an international media outlet reported that Carey broke some glasses and dishes in a hotel room. After her meltdown, the music superstar had also reportedly cancelled all of her public appearances including a headlining performance. She claimed to be really stressed and delirious as she was juggling a video session, a recording session, and a whirlwind publicity schedule. She further added that the non-stop pace was getting to her which led to a breakdown.
